Blykalla advances SMR deployment with second Swedish plant application
Blykalla has submitted a second application for a small modular reactor project in Sweden, following an earlier proposal filed in May for a six-unit installation in Norrsundet within the Gävle municipality in east central Sweden. The company, which develops the SEALER (Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor) technology, targets locations where advanced nuclear power can serve industrial and regional needs beyond traditional large-reactor sites.
Blykalla's strategy emphasizes geographic flexibility. According to CEO Jacob Stedman, the company seeks "locations across Sweden where advanced nuclear power will deliver the greatest value," noting that lead-cooled reactors enable deployment "closer to industry, in new municipalities and inland locations where traditional nuclear power has historically not been possible."
Technology and timeline
Blykalla originated as a spin-off from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where lead-cooled reactor research has proceeded since 1996. The company was established in 2013 and is developing the SEALER-55 unit, rated at 140 MWt and 55 MWe. The company targets commercial operation of its first reactor in the early 2030s.
Swedish state-aid framework
Sweden's parliament approved state financing mechanisms for new nuclear investment in May of the prior year. The framework provides loans to reduce financing costs for qualifying projects, capped at approximately 5,000 MWe of total capacity across supported reactors. Eligibility requires co-location of reactors with combined output of at least 300 MWe.
Financial support takes the form of two-way Contracts for Difference, available once a reactor achieves operational status and receives a license for full-capacity electricity production. The state-aid act entered force on 1 August, opening applications to interested developers. Multiple companies have since applied, including Blykalla, positioning the framework as a significant mechanism for SMR and large-reactor deployment in the Nordic region.
